SCAM ALERT: Sheriff’s Office Warns of Fraudulent Bond Payment Calls

BRUNSWICK COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE SEAL

Scammers posing as Law Enforcement are Demanding Immediate Bond Payments from Families of Recently Arrested Individuals.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers pretend to be bail bondsmen or law enforcement officers. These scammers claim that an immediate bond payment is needed for someone’s release, sometimes using real local names or spoofed phone numbers to appear legitimate.

Officials emphasize that the Sheriff’s Office does not handle bond payments, will never request money over the phone, and will never ask for personal or financial information through payment apps or gift cards.

Residents who receive a call like this are urged to hang up immediately. To verify information or report a scam, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 910‑253‑2777. Individuals are also encouraged to independently look up a bail bondsman’s official number rather than relying on information provided during an unsolicited call.

If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts and confirm before sending money.
