First responders urge caution as snow begins to impact the region.

NORTH WHITEVILLE, NC — The North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department is urging residents to stay off the roads as the first wave of a developing winter storm moves across the region.

This is only the start of the storm, and conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day. Roadways across the area are already covered with snow, lane markings are difficult to see, and additional traffic is making surfaces even slicker.

Emergency crews — including Fire, Rescue, EMS, and Highway Patrol — are asking the public to avoid unnecessary travel so responders have clear access to calls. Packed snow and limited visibility are slowing response times and increasing risks for both drivers and first responders.

“Unless travel is absolutely necessary, residents should remain at home,” the department said in its advisory. “Staying off the roads helps keep everyone safer.”

Forecasters expect snowfall and hazardous conditions to continue as the storm intensifies. Local officials will provide updates as conditions change.
