Barbara A. Lalonde, age 73, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at the Brookstone Living Center. Born on May 30, 1952, in Brooklyn, NY, Barbara was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Barbara dedicated her professional life to nurturing young minds as an elementary teacher at Meadow View Elementary School. Her passion for education was evident not only in her teaching but also in her pursuit of knowledge, which led her to receive a master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
Barbara was a woman of deep faith and a devoted member of the Infant of Prague Catholic Church. Her life’s greatest joy came in the form of her beloved grandchildren, whom she adored almost as much as her dogs and her cherished books. Barbara knew that a good story—whether read aloud to little ones or experienced through life’s adventures was the best legacy.
Barbara was known for her loving nature, intelligence, and headstrong spirit. She was a good person whose warmth touched everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Guy Lalonde; her parents, Orville Hawes and Ann Marie (Cain) Hawes; her sister, Kathleen Ward; and her brother, Orville Hawes.
Barbara is survived by her son, Jonathan Lalonde, and his wife Megan of Wilmington, along with their children, Jaylynn and Jonathan. She is also survived by her daughter, Jennifer Damone, and her children, Adrianna and Victoria. Her sister, Jerilyn and her husband, Dr. Mark Suhrland of Massapequa, NY; her sister-in-law, Julann Hawes of Farmingdale, NY; and a large extended family also mourn her passing.
A funeral mass is being planned, and further details will be provided in the coming days. Barbara will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
In Barbara’s passing, we say goodbye to a wonderful person whose life was as vibrant as the stories she loved to tell. She taught us not only how to read and write, but how to live with grace and humor.
