Town ordinance adds stop signs and restricts truck traffic to improve safety on a heavily traveled island roadway
Sunset Beach, NC — The Town of Sunset Beach has implemented a new traffic pattern on 6th Street, one of the island’s busiest corridors, especially during the summer months when visitor traffic increases sharply. Town Council approved the changes on June 1, 2026, with the goal of slowing vehicles, reducing cut‑through traffic, and improving safety for pedestrians and residents.
Under the new ordinance: Through‑truck traffic is no longer permitted on 6th Street and two additional stop signs have been installed at the intersection of 6th Street and Canal Drive, creating a three‑way stop.
Town officials say the adjustments are intended to calm traffic in an area where walkers, cyclists, and beachgoers frequently cross or travel near the roadway. Lower speeds and controlled intersections give drivers more time to react and help reduce the risk of crashes.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to watch for the new signage, follow all posted regulations, and use extra caution as drivers adjust to the updated pattern.
