Shallotte, NC — The N.C. Forest Service reports that the Quarry Road Fire in Shallotte is now 100% contained as of Aug. 6, 2026. The wildfire, which burned 283 acres, reached full containment after nearly four weeks of monitoring and suppression work. Containment reflects portions of fire line that pose no escape risk without additional firefighter action.
The fire was first reported on Friday, July 10. Following investigation, the NC Forest Service determined the cause to be a lightning strike, tracing ignition back to lightning activity recorded in the area on May 28. According to the agency, the strike produced a holdover fire, a type of lightning‑caused ignition that can smolder underground for days or even weeks before surfacing.
Holdover fires typically burn in duff, the layer of decomposing organic material beneath surface litter such as twigs, needles, and leaves. Duff is considered “ground fuel” for wildfire. Because it is densely packed and oxygen‑limited, duff tends to smolder rather than produce visible flames. When duff is wet, it is far less receptive to ignition. When prolonged drought dries it out, it can support underground smoldering that slowly spreads until conditions allow the fire to emerge.
The Forest Service notes that exceptional drought, extreme heat, and the absence of wetting rainfall significantly increased lightning ignition efficiency this season. Dry, deep duff layers and heavy dead fuels created conditions in which cloud‑to‑ground lightning strikes were more likely to start fires and sustain smoldering.
With containment now complete, the Quarry Road Fire will transition out of active status.
