National Hurricane Center Lowers 2026 Hurricane Season Outlook

Updated forecast reflects stronger El Niño and reduced storm‑development potential

The National Hurricane Center has lowered its outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, reducing the expected number of named storms as atmospheric conditions continue to suppress tropical development.

The updated forecast, released August 6, now calls for 7 to 13 named storms, down from the earlier projection of 8 to 14 issued at the start of the season. The revised range includes the two storms already recorded this year.

Forecasters cite strengthening El Niño conditions as the primary factor behind the reduced outlook. El Niño typically increases wind shear over the Atlantic, making it more difficult for storms to organize and intensify.

The updated guidance also maintains the expectation of 2 to 6 hurricanes and 0 to 2 major hurricanes, leaving open the possibility that the season could end without a single major hurricane. The last time the Atlantic recorded zero major hurricanes was 2013.

Through early August, the season has produced two short‑lived named storms and no hurricanes. Accumulated Cyclone Energy remains well below average for this point in the season, reflecting the limited strength and duration of early‑season activity. While the peak months of August and September can still produce rapid changes, forecasters note that the overall environment remains unfavorable for widespread storm development.

The National Hurricane Center now places the probability of a below‑normal season at 75%, up from 55% in June.

Officials emphasize that even quiet seasons can produce impactful storms and encourage residents to maintain preparedness plans through the remainder of the season.
