Health Department urges vaccination review as regional cases rise
WHITEVILLE, N.C. — The Columbus County Health Department released a public health advisory for families in Whiteville City Schools following an increase in measles cases reported in North Carolina and nearby states. The notice emphasizes vaccination, symptom awareness, and timely communication with healthcare providers.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close personal contact. The virus can remain suspended in the air for up to two hours after an infected individual leaves an area. Infants, pregnant individuals, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone who is unvaccinated or not fully immunized face the greatest risk of severe illness.
The advisory encourages parents and guardians to review their children’s immunization records to ensure compliance with state requirements. CDC guidelines call for two doses of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, with the first dose administered at 12 to 15 months of age and the second at 4 to 6 years. Adults who are unsure of their vaccination status are advised to receive at least one dose. North Carolina law requires students to meet immunization standards unless a valid medical or religious exemption is on file.
Families are also urged to monitor for symptoms associated with measles, including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and rash. Children experiencing these symptoms should remain home from school and receive prompt medical evaluation.
At this time, no operational changes have been made within Whiteville City Schools. Health officials note that increased awareness and prevention efforts are essential to reducing the risk of illness and protecting the broader community. The Columbus County Health Department will continue monitoring measles activity and will issue updates if conditions change.
