Myrtle Beach, SC — A loggerhead sea turtle successfully laid 119 eggs on a recently renourished section of beach near 64th Avenue North early Sunday morning, prompting an immediate conservation response to protect the nest.

To ensure the best possible chance for a successful hatch, community volunteers and interpretive rangers from Myrtle Beach State Park carefully excavated the eggs and relocated them to a more secluded area along the Grand Strand.

The delicate transfer ensures the nest remains safe from heavy foot traffic while staying fully compliant with wildlife regulations under Marine Turtle Permit 510.

If all goes well, the 119 tiny hatchlings are expected to emerge and begin their trek to the Atlantic Ocean later this summer.

With nesting season now officially underway, local authorities are reminding residents and visitors that simple changes in beach behavior can mean the difference between life and death for these federally protected marine animals. Nesting mothers and emerging hatchlings face significant physical obstacles on populated beaches, making public cooperation vital for their survival.

Beachgoers are urged to completely fill in any holes and flatten sand structures before leaving the shore, as deep pits can easily trap a heavy adult turtle or a disoriented hatchling. In addition, all personal gear, including chairs, tents, and toys must be removed from the beach every evening to prevent blocking the turtles’ paths.

Because marine turtles rely heavily on the natural light of the moon and stars to navigate, keeping beachfront lights turned off or shielded at night is critical to prevent dangerous disorientation. Finally, officials remind the public to always maintain a respectful distance from nesting turtles and marked, roped-off nests.
