CONWAY, SC — Horry County Fire Rescue (HCFR) had a busy Saturday, responding to both a residential structure fire and a serious single-vehicle accident that blocked traffic for hours.

Kitchen Fire Quickly Contained on Cove Road

First responders were dispatched to the first incident at 12:58 p.m. yesterday, May 30, following reports of a residential structure fire on Cove Road in Conway.

HCFR crews arrived on scene and quickly brought the fire under control. Officials confirmed the blaze was contained to the kitchen area, limiting the overall damage to the residence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the occupants will not be displaced. Crews remained on the scene yesterday afternoon to ventilate the remaining smoke from the home.

Two Hospitalized, Lanes Blocked in Highway 544 Crash

Later in the evening, emergency crews shifted their focus to a major traffic incident. At 6:15 p.m. yesterday, HCFR was dispatched to a single-vehicle accident near Highway 544 and Susie Lane.

According to officials, a vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree, leaving the occupants confined inside. HCFR crews deployed specialized extrication operations to cut the victims free from the wreckage. Two people sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital; their current conditions have not been released.

The collision forced authorities to shut down all Conway-bound lanes of Highway 544 yesterday evening while rescue and cleanup operations took place. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Horry County Fire Rescue and local law enforcement remind residents to remain vigilant on the roads and ensure their home smoke detectors are functioning properly. We extend our sincere gratitude to these dedicated first responders for their swift, lifesaving actions and continued service to the Conway community.
