Deputies say the charge involves injury to a victim unable to protect themselves.

LELAND, NC — Kathryne Haskett, 47, was arrested on a felony charge of abusing a disabled or elderly person causing injury. The charge indicates investigators believe the victim was unable to protect themselves due to age and/or disability.

Elder abuse cases have risen across North Carolina as the state’s population ages, and prosecutors often pursue these cases aggressively. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has not released details about the victim’s condition or the circumstances leading to the arrest. Haskett remained in custody following her booking.

All individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
