Officers say local ordinances prohibit firing a gun except in limited, lawful circumstances.

LELAND,  NC — Police arrested Jay Scott, 46, after he allegedly discharged a firearm within Leland city limits on June 4. Town ordinances prohibit firing a gun except in self‑defense or at approved shooting ranges, and violations can result in criminal charges, fines, or probation.

Officers responded to a report of gunfire in a residential area and located Scott shortly afterward. No injuries were reported, and police have not said whether the incident involved a dispute or an accidental discharge. Scott was booked into the county jail and later released on bond.

All individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
