As visitors arrive and the pace of life slows, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that a little extra vigilance goes a long way in protecting our community.
Brunswick County, NC — As the summer season warms up and our streets fill with the familiar hum of visitors and new neighbors enjoying all that our corner of the South has to offer, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is reminding us all that keeping our communities safe is a shared responsibility. With the pace of life slowing down to match the summer heat, it is easy to become a little more laid back, but local law enforcement is encouraging everyone to keep a watchful eye on their property to ensure our neighborhoods remain as secure and welcoming as they are beautiful.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to take proactive measures to enhance neighborhood safety, emphasizing that crime prevention begins with individual action.
A safer community relies on residents performing simple, effective security measures at home and while in the community, including keeping properties well-lit, ensuring doors and vehicles are locked, securing valuables, and remaining vigilant against suspicious activity.
According to the latest guidance from the agency, homeowners should conduct regular assessments of their property to minimize risks. Key recommendations include ensuring that all exterior lighting is functional, particularly around entryways and dark areas, and maintaining landscaping by trimming back overgrown bushes that could provide cover for criminal activity. Additionally, residents are encouraged to utilize visible camera systems as a deterrent, while ensuring that all login and access credentials for these systems are managed securely.
Vehicle and firearm security also remains a critical priority for local law enforcement.
Residents are advised to keep vehicles locked at all times and to never leave firearms, wallets, or electronics inside unattended vehicles overnight. Furthermore, maintaining a record of serial numbers for firearms and other high-value items can prove essential for investigations should a theft occur.
The Sheriff’s Office maintains that community involvement is the most powerful tool in the fight against crime, and they encourage residents to act as the “eyes and ears” for law enforcement. Citizens who witness suspicious behavior, whether it involves unusual individuals, vehicles, or activities, should report it to the authorities immediately. For any crime in progress or immediate emergencies, residents must call 9-1-1.
