BAYBORO, SC — A routine grocery run turned into a rescue mission for members of Horry County Fire Rescue (HCFR) on Wednesday afternoon, as first responders pivoted from stocking their pantry to saving a life.
Just before 3:00 p.m., crews from Station 15 (Bayboro) were inside a local grocery store when they were approached by employees concerned about a distressed sound coming from the engine compartment of a vehicle in the parking lot.
Upon investigation, the firefighters discovered a small, frightened orange kitten lodged deep within the engine area of the vehicle. The HCFR team immediately shifted gears, working carefully and methodically to extricate the animal from the engine bay.
“We provide service to patients of all species,” an HCFR representative noted following the incident.
Though the kitten was found to be dehydrated and visibly stressed by the ordeal, officials confirmed that the little one is expected to make a full recovery. Following the successful rescue, employees from the grocery store stepped up to ensure the kitten’s continued well-being, coordinating transportation to a local veterinary clinic for fluids and a comprehensive health examination.
The rescue serves as a reminder of the dedication HCFR crews bring to their community, even when they are off the clock and that every day is a good day, especially when you can save a life of an orphan kitten
