Detention records cite possession of a stolen vehicle; additional charges expected in NC

A Columbus County man is under investigation after allegedly stealing a Columbus County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and driving it across state lines into South Carolina, according to preliminary information gathered from multiple sources.

Michael Terrill Hemingway, 29, of Chadbourn, North Carolina, was taken into custody 8:29 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, in the Green Sea–Loris area of Horry County, South Carolina.

According to South Carolinas J. Reuben Long Detention Center intake information, Hemingway is currently being held on a fugitive warrant from North Carolina. Detention‑center records also list possession of a stolen vehicle among several other serious charges he faces in South Carolina.

Additional charges are pending in Columbus County, North Carolina, according to information available at this stage of the investigation.

North Carolina and South Carolina authorities are coordinating on the case, which involves the recovery of a Columbus County Sheriff’s Office vehicle reportedly taken earlier the same day. Details regarding how the vehicle was obtained, where it was recovered, and the full list of charges have not yet been released by law enforcement.
