Stranding Team responds to multiple early‑morning calls from beach walkers on June 11
Holden Beach, NC — The Holden Beach Turtle Watch Program logged a busy start to the day on June 11, responding to three separate early‑morning reports of nesting sea turtles along the beach.
Observant beach walkers spotted a nesting mother turtle before sunrise and marked the area with seaweed spelling out “turtle” so volunteers could quickly locate the site. The Stranding Team confirmed and marked the nest for the morning rider.
A second call reported a nest laid in the tide line. Volunteers relocated the eggs to a safer location, noting that the incoming tide would likely have washed over the site before the morning rider arrived. A third call soon followed, sending the team to another new nest, which was also marked for monitoring.
The three discoveries bring the season’s count to Nests 15, 16, and 17.
The program expressed appreciation for its Stranding Team after an unusually busy night and reiterated the need for public awareness along the beach.
Anyone who sees a turtle, hatchling activity, or signs of disturbance at a marked nest is urged to call the Stranding Team at 910.754.0766. Volunteers are staffed 24/7.
Conservation work for protected sea turtles on Holden Beach is conducted under authorization from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (ES Permit 26ST11)
