Crews work scattered outages as winds and bitter cold continue across the region

Winter Storm Gianna is moving off the Carolina coast after delivering up to 12 inches of blowing snow across parts of the region overnight. Strong winds and dangerously cold temperatures continue this morning, keeping visibility low and travel hazardous even as the heaviest bands shift offshore.
Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation reports scattered outages across its service area, with crews responding as conditions allow. High winds and extreme cold remain the primary causes of service interruptions.
Duke Energy is also addressing outages tied to strong winds, heavy snowfall, and sub‑freezing temperatures. Line technicians and tree crews are working through the morning, though additional outages remain possible as gusts continue.
In South Carolina, Horry Electric Cooperative is reporting scattered outages caused by wind, ice, and falling limbs. Crews are responding where travel is safe, and members can report outages through the automated phone system, text program, or online portal.
The Sunset Beach Police Department is urging residents to avoid travel, warning that driving in snow puts motorists and first responders at risk on snow‑covered, hazardous roads. “STAY SAFE, STAY PUT,” the department said, advising residents to stay warm and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Statewide and multiple local emergency declarations remain in effect, and officials are urging residents to stay home.
