BOLIVIA, N.C. — Brunswick County Commissioners have unanimously approved purchasing a 380‑acre tract near the Northwest Water Treatment Plant to develop a future raw water reservoir, strengthening long‑term drinking water reliability.
The former quarry site includes a 50‑ to 60‑acre lake and will remain largely wooded. The County purchased Parcel 01000003 for $8,741,778, including $241,778 to preserve timber.
Chairman Mike Forte called the project a “forward‑thinking, long‑term investment” to ensure backup supply during emergencies, drought, or interruptions in the Kings Bluff transmission system. County Manager Steve Stone noted the land could have been developed but will instead support public health needs while maintaining its natural character.
The reservoir will require pumps, pipes, and other infrastructure before entering service.
The project complements major upgrades at the Northwest Water Treatment Plant, which is expanding from 24 MGD to 48 MGD and adding 36 MGD of low‑pressure reverse osmosis treatment. Construction is expected to finish by September 2026.
