Columbus County Commissioners to Hold Emergency Meeting Friday at 8:30am

WHITEVILLE — The Columbus County Board of Commissioners will convene an emergency called meeting on Friday, January 30, at 8:15 a.m. at the county’s administrative building on West Webster Street in Whiteville. The meeting was scheduled in response to pending inclement weather and will cover a range of urgent items across emergency services, administration, economic development, and finance.

Emergency Weather Update

Emergency Services Director Kay Stephens is expected to brief the board on developing weather conditions and preparedness efforts. With winter weather forecasted for the region, Stephens will be available to answer questions and provide updates on local response plans.

Teen Dating Awareness Month Proclamation

Lucy Byrd, representing Families First, will request the board’s adoption of a proclamation declaring February 2026 as Teen Dating Awareness Month. The initiative aims to raise awareness about healthy relationships and prevent dating violence among youth.

February 2 Meeting Cancellation

County Manager Eddie Madden will seek approval of a resolution to cancel the board’s regular session scheduled for Monday, February 2, due to the anticipated weather impacts. Madden will be present to discuss the recommendation and answer questions.

Southeast Regional Park Project Contract

Economic Development Director Dylan Bowen will present a proposed administrative services contract with McAdams and Associates, LLC, totaling $62,500. The contract supports the Southeast Regional Park Project, which is funded through grants. Bowen will be available to explain the scope and timeline of the project.

Finance Requests and Appointments

Finance Director Heather Woody will request approval for several financial actions, including a budget amendment for Emergency Services and the Central Garage, a project ordinance for the county airport, and a departmental requisition.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Columbus County Board of Commissioners office at 127 W. Webster Street.
