County activates emergency operations as hazardous winter weather approaches.
Columbus County, NC — Officials have issued a State of Emergency as a significant winter storm is forecast to impact the region beginning January 30, 2026, bringing the potential for hazardous travel, utility disruptions, and widespread safety concerns.
Current projections indicate the storm could create dangerous road conditions, strain emergency response capabilities, and interrupt critical services across the county. The declaration warns that freezing temperatures, possible ice accumulation, and high winds may lead to downed power lines, blocked roadways, and delays in emergency assistance.
The order applies to all areas within Columbus County but outside municipal limits, activating the county’s emergency operations framework. Under the declaration, county law enforcement, emergency management personnel, and all relevant departments are directed to coordinate response efforts, enforce emergency provisions, and support municipalities, utilities, and partner agencies as conditions deteriorate.
The action is authorized under N.C. General Statute Chapter 166A and Chapter 7 of the Columbus County Code of Ordinances, which empower local officials to implement protective measures during events that threaten public safety.
County leaders describe the declaration as a proactive step to ensure resources are in place before the storm arrives. Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages, limit travel once conditions worsen, and monitor official updates as the system approaches.
