District planning for third station as residential and commercial development expands

CALABASH, NC — The 15% increase in the district fire fee is needed to keep pace with rapid growth, said the Calabash Fire Department, noting that the adjustment was not part of its original budget plan.
Officials said the pace of residential and commercial development across the district has made additional funding necessary to advance planning for a future third fire station.
State legislation permitted fire districts to raise fees by up to 25% this year, but Calabash leaders requested a smaller increase. According to the department, the decision reflects an effort to balance long‑term service needs with the financial impact on residents and businesses. Without additional revenue, officials said progress toward expanding emergency response capabilities would remain limited.
Approximately 11,000 new homes have been approved within the district, with only a portion constructed so far.
Two new retail centers along Highway 17 are also under development, bringing Walmart, Publix, Chase Bank, McDonald’s, Dunkin’, Cuddy’s Pizza, Wawa, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a dental office, and other businesses to the area.
The department reports that each new neighborhood and commercial site adds to call volume, roadway traffic, and overall service responsibility.
Officials said the fee adjustment will support staffing, equipment needs, and planning efforts tied to the future third station. A detailed document outlining the fee increase, projected use of funds, and long‑term planning priorities has been released by the department.
