Officials urge residents to follow irrigation schedules to maintain supply and pressure as holiday demand nears.

BOLIVIA, NC — Brunswick County has issued a Stage 1 Water Conservation Alert, urging residents to manage their water usage more efficiently as demand is expected to rise ahead of the Independence Day holiday. The initiative is intended to ensure that the water supply remains adequate for essential needs throughout the region.

The alert applies to several public water systems, including Brunswick County Public Utilities and the municipal utilities for Bald Head Island, Holden Beach, Oak Island, and Ocean Isle Beach. Brunswick County Public Utilities provides service to unincorporated areas of the county, as well as Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Calabash, Carolina Shores, Caswell Beach, Navassa, Northwest, Sandy Creek, Shallotte, Southport, St. James, Sunset Beach, and Varnamtown.

Customers of Brunswick Regional – H2GO are not included in this specific alert and are advised to check their own provider’s website for any relevant conservation practices.

To ensure all residents, including those new to the area, are aware of the expectations, the county has established a weekly irrigation schedule based on property address numbers:

  • Sundays: Even address numbers.

  • Mondays: No irrigation.

  • Tuesdays: Odd address numbers.

  • Wednesdays: Even address numbers.

  • Thursdays: Odd address numbers.

  • Fridays: Even address numbers.

  • Saturdays: Odd address numbers.

In addition to this schedule, all irrigation is prohibited daily between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m.. Residents are asked to minimize the use of washing machines during those same peak hours. Non-essential water use should be deferred to times outside of peak demand, with a preference for watering after nightfall.

Water consumption trends show that demand currently hits its highest levels on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. window. By following these recommended schedules, officials hope to maintain higher water pressures and prevent sudden, heavy demand on the systems.

Residents seeking further information or having questions about their service may contact their water provider directly or reach the Brunswick County Public Utilities office at 910.253.2657. Ongoing updates and additional details are also available at the county’s website: brunswickcountync.gov/waterwise
