City of Southport, NC — For pet owners in Southport, keeping your furry companions legal is about more than just following the rules. It’s about a digital safety net that spans the city limits. Since April 1, 2024, the City of Southport has partnered with DocuPet to modernize how residents register their dogs and cats, bringing a high-tech approach to pet safety in our coastal community.

Whether you have a roaming retriever or a strictly indoor tabby, here is what you need to know to stay compliant with the city and keep your pets safe.

Is Registration Really Mandatory? In short: Yes. According to city ordinances, all dogs and cats over the age of 4 months that reside within Southport for more than 30 days must be registered.

A common question among residents is whether “indoor-only” cats are exempt. Local officials clarify that the law applies to all owned felines. This requirement ensures that every pet has a verifiable rabies vaccination on file, a critical public health measure and provides a way to identify a pet should they accidentally slip out an open door or escape during a coastal storm.

The DocuPet Advantage is more than just a tag; it’s a direct link back home for your pup or kitty. The transition to DocuPet replaced the old manual filing system at City Hall with a streamlined digital platform. The standout feature of the new system is the HomeSafe™ 24/7 Lost Pet Service.

Every official city tag now comes with a unique code linked to a secure online profile. If a neighbor or an animal control officer finds a lost pet, they can simply look up the code on the tag to access the owner’s contact information and any critical medical details. This system aims to bypass the stressful trip to the Brunswick County Animal Shelter entirely, allowing for a direct “return-to-home” reunion.

Registration isn’t just a one-time task; it’s a yearly renewal.

Licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. DocuPet sends reminders via email and mail 45 days before your license expires to help you avoid lapses. Pet owners must have up-to-date rabies documentation to complete or renew your registration. While the annual fee is a small investment in pet safety, failing to register your pet can lead to a fine of up to $50.00.

Southport residents have two main ways to get their pets squared away:

  1. Online (Fastest): Visit Pet licensing in Southport | Home to create a profile, upload your documents, and even browse “designer” tag upgrades that reflect your pet’s personality.

  2. In-Person: If you prefer the personal touch, you can still register at Southport City Hall, 1029 N. Howe St. The staff there will assist you in entering your pet’s information into the DocuPet system.

  3. APS Officer Ward is available to talk to answer questions/concerns at 910.477.1486

As the Southport community continues to grow, these local ordinances play a vital role in responsible pet ownership. If your pet ever goes on an unplanned adventure, they have the best chance of a quick and safe return to your doorstep.
