Where to find the freshest U-pick and roadside berries in Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry Counties
By BC News Staff Writer
As the warm spring air settles over the coastal Carolinas, a favorite local tradition is returning to our fields: strawberry season. From the sandy soil of the South Carolina coast to the sprawling farmlands of Columbus and Brunswick counties, local growers are reporting a vibrant crop this year. Whether you are looking for a fun afternoon of U-pick harvesting with the family or a quick stop at a roadside stand for a pre-picked flat, the next few weeks offer the peak of flavor and sweetness.
DROUGHT WATCH: Why You Should Pick Sooner Rather Than Later
While the ongoing Severe Drought (D2) across Columbus, Brunswick, and Horry counties has created challenging conditions for farmers, it has a surprising effect on the fruit: this year’s strawberries are exceptionally sweet. Without heavy rains to “water down” the sugars, the flavor is highly concentrated.
However, record-breaking April heat is causing sunscald (bronzing of the fruit) and forcing berries to ripen much faster than usual. With farm ponds at historic lows and no significant “soaker” rains since early April, the season is expected to be shorter than normal.
Our advice: visit your local farm this week to catch the peak harvest.

The local strawberry season is famously short, typically peeking through May. To make the most of the harvest, experts recommend visiting farms early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and the berries are at their firmest. Supporting these local growers not only ensures you get the freshest produce possible but also helps sustain the agricultural heritage that defines our coastal communities. The best berries of the year are waiting.
