WHITEVILLE — Less than 24 hours after new License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras were activated across the city, Whiteville police used the technology to locate and arrest a homicide suspect wanted out of Cumberland County.
According to a statement from Chief Paul Rockenbach, the system flagged a vehicle at approximately 1:45 p.m. on March 5 that was linked to a wanted individual through the NCIC database. Officers quickly located the vehicle and began surveillance.

After several hours, police safely apprehended Q’rana Sha’Dymond McKay, who was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in Cumberland County.
“This is a powerful example of how strategic technology can support the work our officers do every day to keep our community safe,” Rockenbach said. “In less than 24 hours, this investment directly assisted in taking a dangerous individual into custody.”
The department emphasized that LPR camera locations were carefully selected to monitor vehicles entering and leaving the city that may be connected to criminal activity. Rockenbach praised his officers for their patience and professionalism during the arrest.
“This is a strong return on investment for our community,” he added, “and it reinforces our commitment to using responsible technology and proactive policing strategies.”
Whiteville Police Department is a CALEA-accredited agency.
