Two Labrador Retrievers will join the department this fall, and the community is invited to help select their official names
The Town of Oak Island, NC — Beginning in September, the Oak Island Police Department (OKI PD) will reintroduce its K‑9 Unit as part of expanded service to the community. As preparations continue, residents are being offered the chance to help name the department’s two incoming K‑9 officers.
The dogs, formerly referred to as “Elvis” and “Fia,” have not yet been imprinted with permanent names. The Labrador Retrievers will support criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, public events, and search and recovery operations. Each will be paired with an officer who has completed a competitive selection process and is currently participating in a five‑week live‑in training program to become a certified handler.
Police Chief Charlie Morris said the department is working simultaneously to prepare specialized vehicles, equipment, and office space for the new unit.
“Reintroducing a K‑9 Unit is a significant investment in the safety of our community, and it’s a commitment we do not take lightly. We are grateful to the Town Council and Administration for their support in developing a budget that not only makes this program possible, but also provides the resources needed to ensure our K‑9 team is properly equipped and trained.”
In the coming weeks, the department will release a video series documenting the selection, training, and deployment process for the new K‑9 team.
