CALABASH, NC — Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI) has received a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant to construct an ADA-compliant sidewalk connecting the Calabash Senior Center with nearby age-restricted housing.
The project will add integrated lighting and benches along the walkway to remove safety hazards and improve daily mobility and social access for local older adults.
BSRI’s project is part of a statewide total of 21 organizations receiving funding this year. Marking its tenth anniversary, AARP’s Community Challenge has committed $8.3 million nationally to fund 750 quick-action projects aimed at making communities more livable.
“Communities across North Carolina are eager for solutions that boost mobility, connection, and quality of life,” said AARP North Carolina Director Michael Olender.
Since 2017, the initiative has awarded $24.3 million through 2,100 grants nationwide, including 54 to North Carolina entities.
