Freeze Alert: Protect Your Home and Irrigation Systems

Brunswick County Public Utilities urges all customers to take steps to safeguard household plumbing and irrigation equipment during the freezing temperatures expected January 24–27, 2026.

Household Water System Tips
– Insulate pipes in unheated areas and seal gaps around crawl spaces.
Know where your home’s main water shut‑off valve is located.
– Keep Public Utilities’ numbers handy for emergencies:  910‑253‑2657, 910‑371‑3490, 910‑454‑0512.
– Disconnect outdoor hoses and allow indoor faucets to drip slightly to keep water moving.
– Open cabinet doors under sinks to help warm air reach plumbing.
– Thaw frozen spots gently with warm, damp towels—never with open flames or excessive heat.
– Use electric heaters or heat tape only with a GFCI‑protected outlet.

Irrigation and Backflow Protection
– Drain and remove exposed backflow assemblies when possible.
– Check covers for cracks and ensure they fit tightly to block cold air.
– If the assembly stays in place, drain all water, shut off the irrigation system, and leave test cocks and valves ⅛ turn open.
– Wrap the assembly with blankets or towels during the coldest periods.
– Drain outdoor shower lines and add a small amount of RV/Marine antifreeze to drains prone to freezing.
– Turn off irrigation systems to prevent icy walkways; only irrigate when temperatures rise above freezing.
– Know the location of your irrigation shut‑off valve and keep utility contact numbers accessible.
