Crews from Boiling Spring Lakes, Winnabow, and NC Forestry hold fast‑moving fire to its point of origin
Boiling Spring Lakes, NC — A fast‑moving woods fire along Funston Road was brought under control Monday afternoon following a coordinated response involving Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue, Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department, and the North Carolina Forest Service.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. on June 15, Boiling Spring Lakes units were dispatched to a reported brush fire near Funston Road and Daws Creek Road. First‑arriving crews located a seated woods fire burning inside a lumber tract with limited initial access. As fire behavior increased, Funston Road was closed between Governors Road and Caison Loop to protect firefighters and the public.
Smoke at times created near‑zero visibility while multiple apparatus operated along the roadway.
Crews were able to hold the fire to the area of origin. The North Carolina Forest Service arrived quickly and used a plow to establish containment lines around the fire. Firefighters operated for roughly three hours before the incident was fully controlled.
Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department reported that Chief Mercer, Engine 4, Engine 5, Tender 1, Brush 1, and QRV 1 responded at approximately 1:20 p.m. under mutual aid as the fire crossed both districts. Brunswick County EMS provided on‑scene support, and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office secured the area of operations. Bolivia Fire Department covered both districts while crews worked the scene.
Officials from both departments noted that established working relationships helped streamline the response and containment efforts.
