CMS Star Ratings Show Sharp Quality Differences

Federal ratings place Dosher, Brunswick Medical Center and Grand Strand near the top of the region, while Columbus Regional and Conway Medical Center remain in the lowest tiers.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released its latest Hospital Quality Star Ratings, offering a federal assessment of patient outcomes, safety, experience and timeliness of care. The ratings, which range from one to five stars, reflect performance across five weighted categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care.

Hospitals serving Columbus, Brunswick, New Hanover and Horry counties show significant variation in the newest update, with ratings spanning from one to 4-stars.

Columbus County
Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville holds a 1‑star rating, placing it in the lowest CMS tier. Federal data shows below‑average mortality and readmission performance, with patient‑experience and timeliness measures also falling below national benchmarks.

Brunswick County
Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport carries a 4‑star rating. CMS reports above‑average patient‑experience scores, average mortality performance and higher‑than‑average readmission rates. Safety‑of‑care data is not available for this facility in the current CMS release.

Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia also holds a 4‑star rating, reflecting above‑average patient‑experience performance and strong scores in communication, cleanliness and overall satisfaction. The facility’s rating places it among the higher‑performing hospitals in the region.

New Hanover County
Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington holds a 3‑star rating. CMS reports average mortality and readmission performance, with patient‑experience and timeliness measures near national benchmarks. The updated rating places the facility in the middle of the region’s performance range.

Horry County
Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach holds a 4‑star rating, reflecting strong overall performance across multiple CMS categories.

Conway Medical Center in Conway holds a 2‑star rating, with below‑average mortality and readmission performance and above‑average patient‑experience indicators.

The latest CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) ratings show a clear divide between higher‑performing and lower‑performing hospitals in the region. Dosher, Brunswick Medical Center and Grand Strand lead with four stars, while Columbus Regional Healthcare and Conway Medical Center SC, remain in the lowest tiers. New Hanover Regional sits in the middle with three stars.
