Southeastern Community College Expands Into Bolton, Bringing New Access to Classes for Eastern Columbus County

SCC at Bolton launches this summer with workforce training, adult education, and enrichment courses offered at Town Hall and the Senior Center.

BOLTON, NC — Southeastern Community College is expanding its reach into eastern Columbus County with a new off‑campus initiative called SCC at Bolton, bringing college-level classes, workforce training, and adult education directly into the community. The expansion begins this summer and continues into the fall, offering residents easier access to programs without the long commute to SCC’s main campus in Whiteville.

The new instructional sites will operate from Bolton Town Hall and the Bolton Senior Center, two centrally located facilities chosen to reduce transportation barriers for residents in Bolton, Riegelwood, Acme‑Delco, and surrounding communities.

SCC leaders say the move is part of a broader effort to close access gaps across the county. “Expanding the college’s reach means meeting students where they are,” said Dr. Brandon Jenkins, SCC’s Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. “These classes, support services, and opportunities will now be available close to home for many who need them.”

The idea for SCC at Bolton grew from early conversations between Bolton Mayor Shawn Maynor, SCC President Dr. Chris English, and the college’s academic leadership team. Community partners, including J.R. Brown of Self‑Help, have also voiced support for the project.

The summer schedule includes a range of workforce and continuing education courses such as Employment Skills, DSS Caseworker Part I, Fundamentals of Electrical Wiring & Motor Control, Computer Literacy, NC Escort Vehicle Operator, Effective Teacher Training, Defensive Driving, Work Zone Flagger, and Acrylic Painting.

Fall offerings expand further with Truck Driver Training, HVAC Refrigeration Systems Fundamentals, DSS Caseworker Part II, and an Introduction to Genealogy course.

SCC will also provide Transitional Studies programs in Bolton, including basic skills and adult education classes. Many courses will be free or low‑cost, and financial assistance is available through WIOA at the NCWorks Career Center. SCC officials say affordability and accessibility were key priorities in designing the Bolton expansion.

For eastern Columbus County residents, SCC at Bolton represents one of the most significant local education expansions in recent years, positioning the town as a new hub for workforce development and lifelong learning.
