Southport Police and NC Wildlife officials successfully relocated the massive reptile Monday afternoon after it wandered from a driveway to a resident’s doorstep
SOUTHPORT, NC — Residents in one local neighborhood got a “big” surprise this afternoon when a 12-foot alligator decided to skip the pond and head for the porch.
Southport Police and Animal Protective Services responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon – regarding a large alligator in a homeowner’s driveway. By the time officers arrived, the reptile had moved even closer to the house, deciding to take a little seat on the front porch of a nearby neighbors’ home, apparently thinking he might get cold glass of sweet tea.
With the help of North Carolina Wildlife Officers, the massive alligator was safely captured and is currently being relocated.
As the weather warms up, alligator activity is on the rise. To keep your family and pets safe, local officials and NC Wildlife recommend following these ‘Gatorwise’ basics:
-
Assume alligators are present in or near water.
-
Never feed alligators, it makes them lose their fear of humans.
-
Don’t dispose of fish scraps or food in the water.
-
Never harass, capture, or handle an alligator.
-
Be responsible for & present for children and pets in your care near water.
-
Maintain awareness at all times when you are near the water’s edge.
