Winter Storm Safety: What to Do Before, During, and After Severe Weather

As winter weather approaches for this weekend, residents across Brunswick and Columbus counties are encouraged to prepare early and stay informed.

The National Weather Service and NOAA have released a winter storm planning timeline to help families take proactive steps before conditions worsen.

A few days out, when forecasts begin to show the possibility of snow, ice, or freezing temperatures, households should begin preparing. This includes stocking emergency supplies for both home and car, checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replenishing fuel for vehicles and heating sources.

The day before a storm, residents should monitor updated forecasts and adjust plans accordingly. It’s important to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, bring pets indoors and be sure your pipes are protected.

During and after the storm, safety remains the top priority. Drive only, if necessary, check on neighbors and kin, and use emergency heat sources with proper ventilation. Keep generators at least 20 feet away from the home to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
