Administrators emphasize safety and student achievements as the Class of 2026 enters its final weeks of the semester.
WHITEVILLE, NC — As the academic year draws to a close, Whiteville High School administrators are providing families with a comprehensive guide to the upcoming celebrations, safety protocols, and final testing schedules. To ensure a smooth transition during these busy final weeks, school leaders are reinforcing student safety measures, strongly encouraging families to use designated pickup areas or school-provided transportation rather than allowing students to walk home.
The school community is also celebrating several recent highlights, including a successful production of The Wizard of Oz led by Mr. McGougan and the WHS drama department. In staff achievements, Mrs. Lauren Nye has been named the 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year and will represent the school in the upcoming district-level competition. On the health front, the Columbus County Health Department will be on campus May 15 to administer required meningococcal vaccines to rising seniors. Consent forms have been distributed, and Nurse Nance remains available for any parent questions.
The Class of 2026 is now entering its final stretch of high school traditions, beginning with the Senior Walk on May 20 and the Senior Breakfast and group photo on May 29. Photo packages are currently available for purchase through the front office or online via Mrs. Collins. These milestones coincide with a series of recognition events, including Academic Superstars (May 19), Scholarship Award Night (May 21), the Baccalaureate Service (May 26), and the Athletic Awards Ceremony (May 28).
Academic requirements will wrap up with teacher-made exams from May 27 through May 29, followed by EOC and CTE testing from June 1 through June 4. After makeup exams and graduation practice on June 5, the season culminates with the Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, June 6, at 9:00 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Overflow seating will be provided in Bowers Auditorium. School leaders say they remain focused on supporting students through this spirited final stretch, which also includes athletic playoffs, an arts concert, and the FFA banquet.
