With Horry County locked in a severe drought, public utilities monitor weekday compliance to avoid triggering mandatory water restrictions.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Public utility monitors are analyzing system pressure loads today as Grand Strand residents and property managers face the strictest test yet of the region’s voluntary conservation initiative: the Monday irrigation freeze.
Under the drought response framework issued late last week, water customers are asked to completely shut down automated lawn sprinklers and landscape irrigation systems every Monday. The directive aims to give depleted local water tables a critical operational buffer following the area’s driest January-to-April stretch in more than 130 years.

With local tourism numbers remaining at peak summer capacity, the daily population surge continues to place a heavy burden on municipal infrastructure. While utility officials have not reported any major system failures or pressure drops over the weekend, they emphasize that maintaining a voluntary approach depends heavily on widespread compliance during these designated weekday cutbacks.
The South Carolina Drought Response Committee currently maintains a “Severe Drought” status for Horry County, with nearly half of the county officially pushing into the “Extreme Drought” category.
Beyond residential water management, the prolonged rainfall deficit is triggering sharp warnings from forestry and emergency services. Soil moisture levels across the coastal plain have dropped significantly, elevating the risk of erratic brush fires and prompting officials to urge extreme caution with any potential outdoor ignition sources through the workweek.
Public utilities reiterate that if voluntary conservation targets are not achieved during this high-demand period, municipalities may be forced to transition into mandatory enforcement structures and secondary billing penalties later this summer.
