WHITEVILLE — Police are investigating a break-in at the Columbus County Parks and Recreation garage that resulted in the theft of thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment.
The larceny occurred on February 28, but was not reported until March 2, when employees arrived at the North Thompson Street facility and discovered signs of forced entry. According to the police report, someone cut through a perimeter fence and gained access to multiple vehicles and buildings on the property.
Staff told officers that several tools and pieces of equipment were missing, though the exact value of the stolen items was still being assessed. No injuries were reported, and no suspects were identified at the time of the initial investigation.
Police are reviewing available surveillance footage and inventory records. The case remains open.
