Leadership transition takes effect August 1 as longtime Fire Chief Rob Johnson retires
Sunset Harbor, NC — The Sunset Harbor & Zion Hill Volunteer Fire Department has selected Kurt Reinert as its next Fire Chief, marking a significant leadership transition for the organization. Reinert has served with the department for 10 years and brings more than two decades of experience in the fire service, including nearly six years as Deputy Fire Chief.
The department also announced the appointment of Herman “Blue” Born as the new Deputy Fire Chief. Born enters the role with 43 years of fire service experience and has served in positions ranging from firefighter to Fire Chief. He most recently spent six years as the Fire Chief in Ocean Isle Beach.
Both Reinert and Born will begin their new roles on August 1, 2026.
They step into these positions as Fire Chief Rob Johnson prepares to retire on August 1 after a 46‑year career in the fire service, including nearly 11 years leading the Sunset Harbor & Zion Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
