SUNSET BEACH, NC — With summer, comes heavier boat traffic to our local waterways, the Sunset Beach Fire Department is urging residents and visitors to take proactive steps to stay safe on the water. Officials say preparation, awareness, and responsible operation remain the most effective ways to prevent emergencies.
The department is reminding boaters to wear properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets for everyone aboard. Check weather and tide conditions before departure, and avoid operating any vessel under the influence of alcohol. Operators need to follow navigation rules, maintain safe speeds, and stay alert to changing conditions, especially during peak holiday periods.
Before launching, boaters are advised to confirm they have essential safety equipment on board, including life jackets for all passengers, a fire extinguisher, visual distress signals, a sound signaling device, navigation lights, a first aid kit, reference materials, and a fully charged phone or marine radio.
Fire officials say the goal is simple: make sure every outing ends safely, emphasizing that preparation and awareness can prevent most incidents.
