State Agencies to Conduct Full‑Scale SC Hurricane Evacuation Exercise on Wednesday

South Carolina Emergency Management Division

Lane‑reversal procedures will be simulated on major coastal evacuation routes; no traffic impacts expected.

South Carolina emergency officials are preparing for the heart of hurricane season with a coordinated, full‑scale evacuation exercise scheduled for Wednesday, June 10. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety will lead the drill in partnership with SCDOT, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, and additional State Emergency Response Team agencies.

The exercise will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will simulate lane‑reversal operations on key evacuation corridors, including Interstate 26, U.S. 21, U.S. 278, U.S. 501, and S.C. 544. These routes are critical for moving coastal residents inland during a real evacuation order.

Officials stress that this is a simulation only. No lanes will actually be reversed, and the exercise will not affect normal traffic flow for drivers.
