Devices are useless to thieves; $1,000 reward offered for return
Whiteville, NC — Five GPS ankle monitoring devices were reported missing from a Whiteville bail bonding business, prompting a theft investigation and a public request for information.
Around the Clock Bail Bonding, located on Washington Street, discovered that five monitors and their chargers were gone and could not be accounted for. The equipment, valued at approximately $5,000, was scheduled to be shipped to Burke County for use in a pending criminal case.
Owner Mark Cartret said the devices hold no practical value outside of their intended use. According to Cartret, the monitors can be immediately located if powered on or connected to a charger. As of Monday, none of the missing units have activated or sent any location data.
The company is offering a $1,000 reward for the safe return of the equipment. Anyone with information is asked to call 888.317.2235
GPS ankle monitors are commonly used in pretrial release, probation supervision, domestic violence cases, and other court‑ordered monitoring situations. Losing multiple units at once is unusual and requires mandatory reporting to law enforcement.
