Warrants say the officer required a tourniquet and stitches after being cut during the arrest attempt.
SOUTHPORT, NC — A Southport man accused of injuring a police officer during a 2025-foot pursuit has been taken into custody after months at large. Louis Ellis Hodge, 44, was arrested on May 28 and is being held without bond, according to arrest warrants.
The charges stem from an incident in mid‑August 2025, when a Southport Police Department officer attempted to stop a motorcyclist on E. Moore Street. The rider refused to stop, leading to a pursuit through the city. The suspect later crashed the motorcycle on Shepard Road and fled on foot.
As the officer attempted to take the fleeing rider into custody, warrants allege that Hodge cut the officer, causing a serious injury. The wound required a tourniquet to control bleeding and stitches to close, according to the documents.
Hodge is charged with:
- Felony resisting a public officer causing serious injury
- Felony assault on a law enforcement officer causing serious injury
- Felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle

In a statement, the Southport Police Department praised the coordinated effort that led to Hodge’s arrest and highlighted the response the night of the incident.
SPD thanked the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department, and Southport Fire and EMS for assisting both at the scene and throughout the investigation. Fire and EMS personnel transported the injured officer after the assault.
The department also commended Officer Morsch and Sgt. Wade for applying a tourniquet to stabilize the wounded officer and for maintaining a perimeter while additional units searched for the suspect, who had run into the surrounding area after the crash and struggle. Hodge remains in custody as the case proceeds.
All individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
