Southport, NC — Southport Fire Department officials say a 25% increase to the district’s Fire Fee was necessary to maintain financial stability and ensure the level of fire protection expected throughout the community. The adjustment, approved as part of the 2026–2027 budget, marks the first increase in Fire Fee revenue since 2019.
Fire Chief Charles A. Drew said the department has faced rising costs across nearly every aspect of emergency service operations, including apparatus, equipment, protective gear, maintenance, fuel, training, insurance, and other essential expenses required to keep the department prepared and responsive.
According to the department, the updated fee structure helps stabilize ongoing budget challenges while creating a more equitable funding system across the entire Southport Fire District. Fire protection services extend beyond the municipal limits of the City of Southport, and officials say the adjustment ensures the financial responsibility is shared more fairly—not placed disproportionately on municipal taxpayers.
The Fire Fee Rate Setting Committee, made up of two mayors, the fire chief, the District 3 county commissioner, and two citizen appointees, reviewed the department’s financial needs and districtwide service demands. After evaluating the information, the committee voted unanimously to approve the 25% increase.
Chief Drew said the decision was made carefully and with the goal of protecting the department’s long‑term financial stability, maintaining operational readiness, and continuing to provide dependable fire and emergency services to the citizens and communities served by the Southport Fire District.
The department expressed appreciation for the continued support of residents, noting that community backing ensures firefighters and emergency personnel remain trained, equipped, and ready when calls for help arise.
