Experienced jumper remains in stable condition after midair fall at Cape Fear Regional Jetport; community initiates recovery support.
SOUTHPORT, NC — A local skydiver is currently recovering in the intensive care unit at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center following a midair accident at Skydive Coastal Carolinas on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
Anthony Pietrucci Jr., 36, was injured during a jump at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport at approximately 9:40 a.m. Pietrucci, an experienced skydiver, sustained severe injuries during the descent, including a pelvic fracture, broken ribs, and a fractured lower back. He underwent emergency surgery to treat internal hemorrhaging and required extensive blood transfusions to stabilize his condition. He remains in the ICU as of July 8.
The accident occurred under conditions that were reported as suitable for flight operations. While investigations into the mechanics of the jump are ongoing, the incident has highlighted the inherent risks of high-speed canopy maneuvers often practiced by experienced skydivers.
The facility’s staff initiated emergency protocols immediately following the impact, and local emergency responders arrived on the scene within eight minutes to provide transport to the hospital.
His family has said, he is in high spirits after the skydiving accident that resulted in being airlifted to the Novant ICU to treat “catastrophic” injuries.
In the days following the accident, community members have organized support efforts for the family, including a fundraiser to assist with the substantial medical costs associated with the recovery process.
