Town cites rising operational costs and state‑mandated increases; residents may subscribe directly with GFL Environmental.
The Town of Shallotte, NC — Will be discontinuing its municipal recycling program effective June 25, 2026, following a review of rising operational expenses and state‑mandated cost increases affecting local governments across North Carolina.
Town officials said the decision was made after evaluating long‑term financial sustainability and the Board’s commitment to avoiding a property‑tax increase for residents. Inflationary impacts and required expenditures across multiple areas of municipal operations have contributed to significant budget pressures in recent years.
Recycling has been a valued service for many Shallotte residents, and the Town acknowledged the impact the change may have on households. Officials emphasized that Shallotte remains committed to maintaining core public services while practicing responsible stewardship of taxpayer funds.
