WILMINGTON, NC — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch, in effect until 5:00 p.m. today, March 12 for portions of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

The watch includes Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Inland Pender, Inland New Hanover, and Inland Brunswick counties, along with several neighboring counties across the state line.

Forecasters say storms developing this afternoon may produce damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado, especially in inland zones where instability is highest.

Residents are urged to stay weather‑aware as conditions evolve.

The information comes from Thursday morning’s Hazardous Weather Outlook, which highlights the potential for severe thunderstorms today and notes a separate concern for freezing temperatures next Tuesday night, particularly for inland communities.

Have More Than One Way to Get Alerts
Emergency managers across Southeastern North Carolina stress that no single alert system is guaranteed during fast‑moving storms. Cell coverage can drop, apps can lag, and power outages can interrupt broadcasts. Having multiple, reliable ways to receive warnings is the safest approach.

Local options include:
• Alert Whiteville — City-issued emergency notifications for residents in and around Whiteville and Columbus County.
• Brunswick County CodeRED — Countywide alerts for severe weather, evacuations, boil-water notices, and other urgent public safety updates.
• A reliable weather app on your phone — Helpful for radar and general notifications. Apps are a useful supplement but should not replace Wireless Emergency Alerts or NOAA Weather Radio.

Bottom line: If one alert method fails, another will still reach you

BC News will continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency officials throughout the afternoon.
