WHITEVILLE, NC — An 18-year-old student faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after law enforcement located a handgun and marijuana at Southeastern Community College on Thursday.
Chrysler Chance Chavis, 18, whose primary address was listed as China Grove with a local address on Old Stake Road in Chadbourn, was arrested Aug. 13 by Columbus County Sheriff’s Office deputies stationed in connection with campus security.
Concealed Firearm and Campus Drug Charges
According to arrest warrants, law enforcement officers located a concealed 9mm handgun in Chavis’ possession while on the Southeastern Community College campus. Under North Carolina state law, carrying a concealed handgun is illegal for anyone under the age of 21, and firearms are strictly prohibited on community college property.
In addition to the weapon, deputies reportedly seized a quantity of marijuana during the encounter.
Chavis was taken into custody and formally charged with:

Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds (Felony)

Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Marijuana Within 1,000 Feet of a School (Felony)

Carrying a Concealed Handgun (Misdemeanor)
Bond and Legal Status
Following his arrest, Chavis was processed at the Columbus County Detention Center and released after posting a $10,000 secured bond. A booking photograph was not immediately available from the facility.
The investigation remains active under the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.
