SC State Fire Marshal Urges South Carolinians to Put Safety First This Fourth of July

Professional displays encouraged as the safest way to enjoy holiday fireworks.

SOUTH CAROLINA — As Independence Day celebrations ramp up statewide, the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to make fireworks safety a top priority to prevent injuries, fires, and avoidable tragedies.

State Fire Marshal Jonathan Jones said “most fire fatalities continue to occur in homes, and many fires begin with preventable actions.” He noted that fireworks can be an enjoyable part of the holiday, but only when used responsibly and with proper precautions.

Jones emphasized that reducing preventable fires remains central to SC State Fire’s mission to protect lives and property through community risk‑reduction efforts. Whether using consumer fireworks at home or attending a professional show, residents are encouraged to follow these safety guidelines outlined by the State Fire Marshal’s Office:

  • Local laws — Check with local officials if unsure about fireworks regulations in your area.
  • Weather conditions — Dry weather increases the risk of wildfires and structure fires.
  • Permitted retailers — Purchase fireworks only from authorized sellers.
  • Adult supervision — An adult should always be present when fireworks are in use.
  • Manufacturer instructions — Read and follow all directions carefully.
  • Outdoor use — Use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and trees.
  • Safe distance — Ensure people and pets are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Water supply — Keep a hose and bucket nearby; soak used fireworks before disposal.

The release also reminds residents that South Carolina law prohibits selling fireworks to anyone under 16 years old.

Jones encouraged families to attend permitted professional fireworks displays whenever possible, calling them the safest option for enjoying holiday celebrations. “There is no safer way to enjoy fireworks than by attending a permitted public display conducted by trained professionals,” he said.
