Red Flag Issued on Oak Island; Overriding National Weather Service Forecast

"Red Skies at Night, Sailors Delight" -- But RED FLAGS on the BEACH - TAKE WARNING
On‑scene assessment superseded federal forecast

OAK ISLAND, NC — July 19, 2026 Beach conditions have been upgraded to Red Flag for the remainder of Sunday after hazardous surf was identified by the Town’s Beach Safety Division. Officials said the locally observed conditions required an immediate change, overriding the National Weather Service’s earlier flag forecast.

A Red Flag indicates a high risk of rip currents and rough surf, with no safe water depth identified anywhere along the shoreline. Beaches remain open for visitors, but ocean swimming and all in‑water activity should not take place under these conditions.
