CONWAY, SC — A railroad bridge along the Waccamaw River in Conway is closed to all vessel traffic following a mechanical issue that has left the span unable to lift for boats. The closure affects the Waccamaw Coast Line Railroad bridge at mile 44.4, a key crossing used by both freight operations and recreational boaters.
County officials said the bridge experienced a mechanical malfunction earlier this week and will remain closed until repair crews can diagnose the problem and determine the scope of work needed. No estimated timeline for reopening has been provided.
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a notice to mariners advising that the bridge is currently in the down position. Depending on water levels, some smaller vessels may still be able to pass, but operators are urged to use caution and avoid attempting transit if clearance is uncertain.
The closure comes during a period of steady summer boating activity along the Waccamaw River. Local officials say updates will be released as repair plans are finalized and additional information becomes available.
