COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC — Residents near state-managed game lands should be prepared to see or smell smoke throughout the coming weeks. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) has issued an advisory confirming that controlled, or “prescribed,” burns will continue across its properties in Columbus County through the summer.
While many associate prescribed fires with the cooler winter months, the Commission notes that “growing season” burns are a vital tool for the region. These summer fires are specifically timed to help control young hardwood growth, which can otherwise overtake critical native habitats.
Why the Commission Uses Fire:
-
Habitat Restoration: Controlled burns encourage the growth of native grasses and herbaceous vegetation, providing essential food and cover for local wildlife, including deer, turkeys, quail, and various songbirds.
-
Biodiversity Support: Species like the red-cockaded woodpecker and Venus flytrap are found only in fire-dependent ecosystems, making these burns essential for their survival.
-
Wildfire Risk Reduction: By clearing out forest fuels like pine straw and leaf litter, these controlled burns help prevent more dangerous, unmanaged wildfires from occurring later in the year.
Safety and Information the NCWRC understands that smoke can be a cause for concern, particularly during the spring and summer. If you see smoke and are unsure of its origin, or if you believe a fire poses an immediate threat, please contact 9-1-1 immediately.
Wildlife officials emphasize that fire is a natural part of the local ecosystem, and the Commission utilizes specific techniques to ensure that native animals have ample time and room to escape managed areas safely.
