Burn ban for all unincorporated areas within Brunswick County

BOLIVIA, NC — The Brunswick County Fire Marshal has officially issued a burn ban for all unincorporated areas within Brunswick County, effective as of 5:00 p.m. today, Monday, June 8, 2026.

The directive comes as a direct response to intensifying drought conditions and elevated fire risks across the region. According to the Fire Marshal’s office, current and forecasted weather models indicate conditions that are increasingly unfavorable for open burning.

  • Unincorporated Areas: The ban prohibits all open burning within 100 feet of any structure in areas not located within city or town limits.

  • Incorporated Municipalities: Because the burn ban applies specifically to unincorporated areas, residents living within the town limits of municipalities—such as Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, or Oak Island—are encouraged to contact their local town hall or municipal officials to confirm local ordinances and whether their specific town has adopted similar restrictions.

  • Permits: This local ban does not apply to open burning permits issued by the North Carolina Forest Service for activities occurring more than 100 feet from an occupied dwelling. However, all residents are urged to practice extreme caution given the current environmental climate.

The burn ban will remain in effect until conditions improve. County officials will issue a follow-up notification once the ban is lifted.

For questions regarding the scope of this ban or for safety guidance, residents are encouraged to contact the Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office at 910-253-2041 or visit the county’s official Burn Ban/Open Burning webpage.
